CYBER SAFE

Education Innovators

As a Trust we are committed to preparing our pupils for life beyond the school gates, which includes teaching our families how to stay safe online.

Stop. Think. Share?

As many schools have experienced the effects of sharing mis/disinformation, particularly so during the COVID-19 pandemic, guides for staff, parents and pupils will be made available as downloads to support with the understanding of the dangers of spreading such information.

Mis/disinformation has been prevalent within our communities within recent years and even more so during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The academies within Wise Owl Trust have been working with Professor Farida Vis, Director of the Visual Social Media Lab at Manchester Metropolitan University to develop a programme of study for Primary children from Reception to Year 6 to make them aware of visual mis/disinformation. This was due to be launched in late 2020, although it will now be delayed due to the current situation.

As many schools have experienced the effects of sharing mis/disinformation, guides for staff, parents and pupils will be made available as downloads to support with the understanding of the dangers of spreading such information. The guide for teachers was launched in May, with the one for pupils and parents to follow at the start of the new school year.

As part of the development of these resources, Prof Vis and her team will be conducting research which will further support the development of our curriculum for pupils.

Cyber Character

When offered the anonymity and freedoms of the World Wide Web, do our children have the necessary character virtues to make wise choices? In such an increasingly complex context, one thing is certain, technology is here to stay and so it is imperative that we teach our children how to use it wisely.

Our Cyber Character unit of work (written inline with the new RSE statutory guidance) comprises of six workshops that explore the character traits that our children need in order to keep themselves safe online and to ensure they themselves are doing the right thing online. Each workshop includes lots of information to support teachers with the delivery of the unit as well as useful resources to be used within the Character Challenge and Classroom Challenge elements of the lesson.

Read our intro booklet below to gain an understanding of our programme intent.
